Tajweed Rules in Surah Yasin

Surah Yasin — called the heart of the Quran in hadith tradition — is one of the most widely recited Surahs in Islam. Its 83 verses are memorized by millions and recited it, for the sick, and in times of difficulty. Yet very few reciters have had its Tajweed rules explained to them systematically, from its opening Huroof Al-Muqattaʿat through its closing verse.

This complete guide to Tajweed rules in Surah Yasin works through the Surah section by section, with scientifically verified Tajweed analysis, precise Makharij descriptions, accurate Quranic text, and common mistakes corrected according to the established principles of the Hafs ʿAn ʿAsim riwayah.

What You Will Learn

The correct Tajweed of يس — Ya and Seen accurately distinguished • Madd Badal in Al-Qur-aan • Madd Muttasil vs Madd Munfasil • Qalqalah on its 5 letters only • Ikhfa vs Idgham accurately applied • Ta Marbuta Waqf rule • Ra Tafkhim and Tarqiq • Common mistakes corrected

Section 1: يس — The Huroof Al-Muqattaʿat Opening

The Tajweed rules in Surah Yasin begin immediately with its opening letters يس (Ya Seen). These two letters have different Madd rules that must be understood precisely and distinctly:

يس

Ya — Seen (each letter recited by its full name)

Surah Yasin 36:1

Tajweed Rules:

▶  YA (يا): The letter Ya belongs to the group of Huroof Al-Muqattaʿat known as (حَيٌّْ طَهُرَ). These are letters whose names contain only 2 letters when written — the letter itself and a short vowel. The letter name Ya = Ya + Alif. There is no Madd letter followed by Sukoon in the name Ya; the Alif here is a short connector, not a Madd letter in the Lazim sense. Therefore: Ya is recited with Madd Tabiʿi Harfi (Natural Madd) = 2 counts only.

▶  SEEN (سين): The letter Seen belongs to the group of Huroof Al-Muqattaʿat that have 3-letter names with a Madd letter in the middle. The name Seen = Seen + Ya (Madd letter) + Noon with Sukoon. The Ya Madd + Noon Sakinah (no Shaddah) = Madd Lazim Harfi Mukhaffaf = 6 counts.

▶  Summary: Ya = 2 counts (Madd Tabiʿi Harfi) | Seen = 6 counts (Madd Lazim Harfi Mukhaffaf).

The Key Distinction: حَيٌّْ طَهُرَ Group vs 3-Letter Group

Huroof Al-Muqattaʿat divide into two groups by their letter names:  1. Letters with 2-letter names (حَيٌّْ طَهُرَ group: ح ي ط ه ر): Their names contain no Madd letter followed by Sukoon → Madd Tabiʿi Harfi = 2 counts. Ya (يا) belongs here.  2. Letters with 3-letter names containing a Madd letter in the middle: The Madd letter + Sukoon on the last letter → Madd Lazim Harfi = 6 counts. Seen (سين) belongs here.  This is why in Alif Lam Meem: Alif = no Madd, Lam = 6 counts, Meem = 6 counts. And in Ya Seen: Ya = 2 counts, Seen = 6 counts.

وَالْقُرْآنِ الْحَكِيمِ

Wal-qur-aanil-hakeem

Surah Yasin 36:2

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Madd Badal in Al-Qur-AAN: The word الْقُرْآن contains a Hamzah followed by an Alif Madd (قُرْآن). The Alif here is a Madd Badal — it substitutes for a second Hamzah. In the Hafs ʿAn ʿAsim riwayah, Madd Badal is recited with Qasr (natural length) = 2 counts. This is NOT Madd Wajib Muttasil.

▶  Makharij ق (Qaf) in Al-Qur-aan: back of tongue against soft palate (Aqsal Lisaan). Permanently heavy (Mufakhkham).

▶  Makharij ح (Ha) in Al-Hakeem: middle of throat (Wasatul Halq), unvoiced (Hams).

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): Al-HakEEM — Ya before Meem.

▶  Madd Arid (Waqf): pausing on Al-Hakeem — 2, 4, or 6 counts on the Ya.

Madd Badal — Precise Definition

Madd Badal (مد بدل): occurs when a Hamzah is followed by a Madd letter in the same word, because the Madd letter substitutes (badal) for a second Hamzah that would have been there originally.  Example: آمَنَ = originally Hamzah + Hamzah + Meem. The second Hamzah is replaced by Alif (the Madd letter). Result: Hamzah + Alif Madd (Badal).  In Hafs ʿAn ʿAsim: Madd Badal = 2 counts (Qasr — natural Madd length). NOT 4 or 6 counts.  IMPORTANT: Madd Badal is completely different from Madd Wajib Muttasil. In Muttasil, the Madd comes BEFORE the Hamzah. In Badal, the Hamzah comes BEFORE the Madd.

Section 2: Verses 3–12 — The Mission of the Messenger

The opening section establishes the Prophet’s mission and contains several key Tajweed rules in Surah Yasin:

إِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

Innaka laminal-mursaleen

Surah Yasin 36:3

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Ghunnah: Innaka — Shaddah Noon = 2-count nasal resonance through the nose.

▶  Idgham with Ghunnah: lamin + Al-Mursaleen — the Noon Sakinah in lamin before the Meem of Al-Mursaleen = Idgham with Ghunnah: nasal merge, 2 counts.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): Al-MursaLEEN — Ya before Noon.

▶  Madd Arid (Waqf): pausing on Al-Mursaleen — Ya Madd + Noon acquires Sukoon at pause = Madd Arid: 2, 4, or 6 counts.

عَلَٰى صِرَٰطمُّسْتَقِيمٍ

ʿalaa siraatin mustaqeem

Surah Yasin 36:4

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Makharij ص (Saad) in Siraat: tip of tongue near upper front teeth with Istiʿla (back tongue raised) and Itbaq (tongue seals to palate). Heavy emphatic Saad — NOT regular S.

▶  Makharij ط (Ta heavy) in Mustaqeem: tip of tongue against upper teeth gums with Istiʿla, Itbaq, Jahr, and Shiddah. The heaviest Tajweed letter.

▶  Qalqalah Sughra on ط (Ta heavy) in Mustaqeem: the Ta (ط) carries original Sukoon (مُسْتَ) = Qalqalah Sughra (minor echo). Note: ط is one of the 5 Qalqalah letters.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): MusTaqEEM — Ya before Meem.

▶  Madd Arid (Waqf): pausing on Mustaqeem at verse end — 2, 4, or 6 counts.

The 5 Qalqalah Letters — Scientific Precision

Qalqalah applies ONLY to these 5 letters when they carry Sukoon: ق (Qaf) | ط (Ta heavy) | ب (Ba) | ج (Jim) | د (Dal)  Memory aid: قُطْبُ جَدٍّ (Qutb Jadd)  Letters NOT in the Qalqalah group (even with Sukoon): ض (Dad), ث (Tha), ت (Ta light), س (Seen), and all others. A Sukoon on any of these produces plain Sukoon — never Qalqalah.

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْيِ الْمَوْتَىٰ

Innaa nahnu nuhyil-mawtaa

Surah Yasin 36:12

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Ghunnah: Innaa — Shaddah Noon = 2-count nasal resonance.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): InNAA — Alif after Noon.

▶  Makharij ح (Ha) in Nuhyi: middle of throat (Wasatul Halq), unvoiced (Hams).

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): Al-MawtAA — Alif at end of the word.

Section 3: The Story of the People of the Town (Verses 13–29)

This narrative section is rich in Tajweed Surah Yasin applications. Precise Quranic text is essential throughout:

واضْرِبْ لَهُم مَثَلؑا أَصْحَٰبَ الْقَرْيَةِ

Wadrib lahum mathalan as-habal-qaryah

Surah Yasin 36:13

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Makharij ض (Dad) in Wadrib: lateral emphatic from sides of tongue against upper molars. Sifaat: Istiʿla, Itbaq, Rakhawa, Jahr, Istitalah. Dad carries Sukoon here (اضْرِبْ). IMPORTANT: Dad is NOT a Qalqalah letter — its Sifah is Rakhawa (free airflow), not Shiddah. There is no Qalqalah on Dad. The Sukoon on Dad is recited with its characteristic Istitalah (lateral elongation) and heaviness, but no bounce/echo.

▶  Tanween on Mathalan: Tanween Fath. If pausing: Madd ʿIwad (Alif 2 counts). If continuing: check letter that follows.

▶  Makharij ص (Saad) in As-haab: heavy emphatic Saad, Istiʿla + Itbaq.

▶  Makharij ق (Qaf) in Al-Qaryah: back of tongue, heavy.

▶  Ta Marbuta at Waqf in Al-Qaryah: when pausing, Ta Marbuta (ة) is pronounced as Ha Sakinah (هْ). Sound: Al-Qar-yah (not Al-Qar-yat). This applies to all Ta Marbuta at Waqf.

Ta Marbuta at Waqf — Always Becomes Ha Sakinah

Any word ending in Ta Marbuta (ة) — when paused upon — is pronounced as Ha Sakinah (هْ), not as Ta.  Examples in Surah Yasin: • Al-Qaryah (القرية) at pause = Al-Qar-yah • Al-Maytah (الميتة) at pause = Al-May-tah (not Al-May-tat) • Aayatun (آية) at pause = Aa-yah  This rule applies universally to all Ta Marbuta at Waqf throughout the Quran.

إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمُ اثْنَيْنِ فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَعَزَّزْنَا بِثَالِثٍ

Idh arsalnaa ilayhimu-thnayn fakadhdhaboohumā faʿazzaznā bi-thaalith

Surah Yasin 36:14 — Note: the correct text is فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا (with dual pronoun هُمَا), not فَكَذَّبُوا

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Madd Jaʼiz Munfasil: arsalNAA + ilayhimu — Alif Madd at end of arsalnaa + Hamzah at start of ilayhimu = separate words = Munfasil: 4–5 or 2 counts.

▶  Makharij ث (Tha) in Bi-thaalith: tip of tongue between the upper and lower front teeth. Sifaat: Hams (unvoiced), Rikhwah (free airflow). The Tha is MAHMUS (unvoiced) — it belongs to the Hams letters (فَحَثَّهُ شَخْصٌ سَكَتَ).

▶  Waqf on Bi-thaalith: the Tha carries Kasra at the end. At Waqf: Sukoon on Tha. Tha is NOT a Qalqalah letter — plain Sukoon only, no Qalqalah.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): thaAAlith — Alif in the middle of the word.

Tha (ث) is Mahmus (Unvoiced) — Scientific Clarification

The 3 interdental letters in Arabic are: • ث (Tha): Mahmus, Rikhwa — UNVOICED fricative (like English ‘th’ in ‘think’) • ذ (Dhal): Majhur, Rikhwa — VOICED fricative (like English ‘th’ in ‘this’) • ظ (Dha heavy): Majhur, Rikhwa, Istiʿla, Itbaq — VOICED heavy interdental  Tha (ث) is Mahmus (voiceless) — never Majhur.

قَالُوا مَا أَنتُمْ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا

Qaaloo maa antum illaa basharum mithlunaa

Surah Yasin 36:15

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): QAAloo — Alif after Qaf.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): MAA — Alif after Meem.

▶  Tanween on Basharun: Tanween Damma. The letter following is Meem of Mithlu-NAA = Idgham with Ghunnah (Tanween Noon before Meem merges with nasal, 2 counts).

▶  Shaddah on Meem in Mithlu-NAA: Ghunnah on the merged Meem, 2 counts.

Section 4: Verses 33–44 — Signs of Creation

This section is particularly rich in Madd types and emphatic letters. Accurate Quranic text is essential:

وَآيَةٌ لَّهُمُ الْأَرْضُ الْمَيْتَةُ

Wa-aayatun lahumul-ardul-maytah

Surah Yasin 36:33

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Madd Wajib Muttasil: wa-AAyatun — the word آية contains Alif Madd + Hamzah in the SAME word = Muttasil: 4–5 counts.

▶  Tanween on Aayatun: Tanween Damma. Before Lam of Lahum = Idgham without Ghunnah (Tanween Noon before Lam = full merge, NO nasal).

▶  Makharij ض (Dad) in Al-Ard: lateral emphatic. Waqf on Al-Ard: Dad with Kasra becomes Sukoon at pause. No Madd Arid (Dad is not a Madd letter). Plain Sukoon with Dad’s Sifaat.

▶  Ta Marbuta in Al-Maytah at Waqf: الْمَيْتَة — when pausing, Ta Marbuta → Ha Sakinah. Sound: Al-May-tah (not Al-May-tat).

▶  Madd Leen: Mayt — Ya Sakinah after Fatha = Madd Leen. No elongation in connected recitation. At Waqf on Al-Maytah: the Ha Sakinah follows the Ya Leen — 2, 4, or 6 counts on the Ya.

وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا جَنَّٰتٍ مِّن نَّخِيلٍ وَأَعْنَابٍ

Wa jaʿalnā feehā jannaatin min nakheelin wa-aʿnaab

Surah Yasin 36:34 — Note: correct text is وَجَعَلْنَا (jaʿalnā), not خَلَقْنَا (khalaqnā)

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Makharij ج (Jim) in Jaʿalnā: middle of tongue against hard palate. Majhur (voiced), Shiddah.

▶  Ikhfa on min jannaat: Noon Sakinah (مِنْ) before Jim (ج). Jim is one of the 15 Ikhfa letters (it is NOT an Idgham letter). Rule: Ikhfa — partial concealment with 2-count Ghunnah. NOT Idgham.

▶  Idgham with Ghunnah on min nakheelin: Noon Sakinah before Noon — same letter = Idgham Maʿal-Ghunnah (full merge with nasal, 2 counts).

▶  Makharij ع (Ain) in Aʿnaab: middle of throat, voiced.

▶  Tanween on Aʿnaab at Waqf: Tanween Fath → Madd ʿIwad (Alif 2 counts). Sound: aʿnaabā.

Ikhfa vs Idgham: The Jim Case

A common error is classifying Noon Sakinah before Jim (ج) as Idgham. This is incorrect.  The Idgham letters are: ي ن م و ل ر (Yarmalu or similar mnemonics). Jim (ج) is NOT in this group.  Noon Sakinah before Jim = Ikhfa Haqiqi: partial concealment of the Noon with a 2-count Ghunnah, then the Jim is articulated. The Noon is not fully merged.

وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَّهَا

Wash-shamsu tajree li-mustaqarrin lahaa

Surah Yasin 36:38

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Shaddah Sheen in Ash-Shams: doubled Sheen.

▶  Makharij ق (Qaf) in Mustaqarrin: back of tongue, heavy.

▶  Tanween on Mustaqarrin: Tanween Kasra before Lam = Idgham without Ghunnah (full merge into Lam, NO nasal).

Wal-qamara qaddarnāhu manāzila hattā ʿāda kal-ʿurjoonil-qadeem

Surah Yasin 36:39

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Makharij ق (Qaf) in Al-Qamar: back of tongue, heavy.

▶  Qalqalah Sughra on د (Dal) in Qaddarnahu: Dal carries Sukoon (قدْدَرْ) = minor Qalqalah echo.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): ManAAzila — Alif after Noon.

▶  Makharij ع (Ain) in ʿAada: middle of throat, voiced.

▶  Makharij ع (Ain) in Al-ʿUrjoon: middle of throat, voiced.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): Al-ʿUrJOOn — Waw before Noon.

▶  Makharij ق (Qaf) in Al-Qadeem: back of tongue, heavy.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): Al-QaDEEM — Ya before Meem.

Section 5: Verses 51–67 — The Day of Resurrection

This section contains important Tajweed Surah Yasin applications including Makharij precision and correct Waqf rules:

وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُم مِّنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَنسِلُونَ

Wa nufikha fis-soori fa-idhā hum minal-ajdāthi ilā rabbihim yansiloon

Surah Yasin 36:51

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Makharij ص (Saad) in As-Soor: heavy emphatic Saad.

▶  As-Soor (الصُّور): This word contains no Hamzah. The Waw is a natural Madd letter (Waw Madd after Damma) = Madd Tabiʿi (Natural Madd) = 2 counts in connected recitation. At Waqf on As-Soor: Waw Madd before Ra which acquires Sukoon = Madd Arid: 2, 4, or 6 counts. There is NO Madd Wajib Muttasil here — no Hamzah exists in this word.

▶  Makharij ج (Jim) in Al-Ajdaath: middle of tongue against hard palate.

▶  Qalqalah Sughra on ج (Jim) in Al-Ajdaath: Jim carries Sukoon (أجْدَ) = minor Qalqalah echo.

▶  Makharij ث (Tha) in Ajdaath: tip of tongue between teeth. Sifaat: Hams (UNVOICED), Rikhwa. The Tha is Mahmus — never Majhur.

▶  Idgham without Ghunnah: min rabbihim — Noon Sakinah before Ra = full merge, NO nasal.

▶  Ra HEAVY in Rabbihim: Ra carries Fatha (Rabbihim: Ra + Fatha) = HEAVY Ra.

وَامتَازُوا الْيَوْمَ أَيَُّهَا الْمُجْرِمُونَ

Wamtaazul-yawma ayyuhal-mujrimoon

Surah Yasin 36:59

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Madd Jaʼiz Munfasil: Al-Yawma + Ayyuha — Alif Madd at end of Al-Yawma + Hamzah at start of Ayyuha = separate words = Munfasil: 4–5 or 2 counts.

▶  Madd Leen: Yawm — Waw Sakinah after Fatha = Madd Leen. No elongation in connected recitation.

▶  Qalqalah Sughra on ج (Jim) in Al-Mujrimoon: Jim carries Sukoon (مُجْرِ) = minor Qalqalah echo.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): Al-MujrimOOn — Waw before Noon.

Section 6: The Closing Verses (Verses 68–83)

The closing section contains the most famous verses of the Surah. Several Tajweed rules in Surah Yasin reach their peak here:

فَسُبْحَٰنَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

Fa-subhānal-ladhee biyadihi malakootu kulli shay-in wa ilayhi turjaʿoon

Surah Yasin 36:83

Tajweed Rules:

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): SubHAAna — Alif after Ha.

▶  Makharij ح (Ha) in Subhaan: middle of throat (Wasatul Halq), Hams (unvoiced).

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): MalakOOtu — Waw after Kaf (long Waw vowel = 2 counts).

▶  Shay-in (شَيْءٍ): This word has a Ya Sakinah after Fatha (يْ) followed by Hamzah (ء) within the same word. The Ya here is a Ya Leen (not a full Madd Ya). The Ya Leen + Hamzah in the same word = Madd Wajib Muttasil based on the presence of Hamzah after Madd letter within one word. However: there is scholarly discussion here. The stronger position for Hafs: the Ya is a Leen letter and the Hamzah is in the same word — this is classified as Madd Muttasil. 4–5 counts. At Waqf on Shay-in (with Tanween): Tanween Kasra becomes Sukoon, and the Leen letter (Ya) before it = Madd Leen Arid: 2, 4, or 6 counts.

▶  Makharij ع (Ain) in Turjaʿoon: middle of throat, voiced.

▶  Madd Asli (2 counts): TurjaOOn — Waw before Noon.

▶  Madd Arid (Waqf): pausing on Turjaʿoon — Waw Madd before Noon which acquires Sukoon = Madd Arid: 2, 4, or 6 counts. Waqf Tam.

The 10 Most Common Tajweed Mistakes in Surah Yasin

  • Giving Ya in يس (36:1) 6 counts — Ya is Madd Tabiʿi Harfi (2 counts only). Only Seen gets 6 counts (Madd Lazim Harfi Mukhaffaf).
  • Treating Al-Qur-AAN (36:2) as Madd Muttasil — correct rule is Madd Badal (2 counts in Hafs).
  • Applying Qalqalah to Dad (ض) in Wadrib (36:13) — Dad is NOT a Qalqalah letter. Plain Sukoon with Istitalah.
  • Applying Idgham (not Ikhfa) to Noon before Jim — Noon Sakinah before Jim = Ikhfa, not Idgham.
  • Calling Tha (ث) Majhur (voiced) — Tha is Mahmus (unvoiced). Always.
  • Pausing on Ta Marbuta as Ta (ت) — all Ta Marbuta at Waqf = Ha Sakinah (هْ). Al-Qar-yah, not Al-Qar-yat.
  • Claiming Madd Muttasil in As-Soor (36:51) — the word has no Hamzah. Natural Madd 2 counts.
  • Missing Qalqalah on ج Jim with Sukoon — Al-Ajdaath (36:51), Al-Mujrimoon (36:59): Jim with Sukoon = Qalqalah Sughra.
  • Light Ra where it should be heavy — Ra with Fatha/Damma = always Mufakhkham.
  • Reciting خَلَقْنَا instead of جَعَلْنَا in 36:34 — the correct Quranic text is وَجَعَلْنَا.

Frequently Asked Questions: Tajweed Rules in Surah Yasin

What is the Madd of Ya in يس?

2 counts (Madd Tabiʿi Harfi). The letter Ya belongs to the حيطهر group — letters whose names have 2 letters with no Madd letter followed by Sukoon. Only Seen gets Madd Lazim Harfi Mukhaffaf (6 counts) because its name SEEN contains Ya Madd + Noon Sakinah.

What is the rule for Al-Qur-AAN in 36:2?

Madd Badal — 2 counts in Hafs ʿAn ʿAsim. The word contains a Hamzah followed by an Alif Madd (the Alif substitutes for a second Hamzah). In Hafs, Madd Badal is recited at Qasr (natural Madd length = 2 counts). It is NOT Madd Wajib Muttasil.

Is there Qalqalah on Dad (ض) with Sukoon?

No. Dad is NOT one of the 5 Qalqalah letters (قطبجد). Dad’s Sifah is Rakhawa (free airflow) — it cannot produce the bouncing echo of Qalqalah. When Dad has Sukoon, recite with plain Sukoon, observing Dad’s characteristics of Istitalah, Istiʿla, Itbaq, and heaviness.

How is Ta Marbuta recited at Waqf?

As Ha Sakinah (هْ). Any word ending in Ta Marbuta — whether Al-Qaryah, Al-Maytah, Rahmah, or any other — when paused upon, is pronounced with Ha Sakinah. Sound: the Ta sound disappears and a soft, unvoiced Ha closes the word.
