In this guide We are gonna learn What Is Qalqalah?
Qalqalah is a Tajweed rule that creates a slight echo or bouncing sound when certain letters carry a sukoon (no vowel). The word Qalqalah in Arabic means “disturbance” or “vibration,” which perfectly describes the subtle vibration heard when these letters are pronounced correctly.
This rule adds clarity and strength to Quran recitation. Without Qalqalah, some letters may sound incomplete or unclear.
The Letters of Qalqalah
There are five letters that have Qalqalah:
ق – ط – ب – ج – د
Many students remember them using the word:
قطب جد
Whenever one of these letters has a sukoon (ْ), the Qalqalah sound must be applied.
When Does Qalqalah Occur?
Qalqalah happens in two main situations:
1️⃣ When the Letter Has Original Sukoon
Example:
يَقْطَعُ
The letter قْ has sukoon, so it is slightly echoed.
2️⃣ When Stopping on a Word
If you stop at the end of a word and the last letter becomes sakin (even if it originally had a vowel), Qalqalah is applied.
Example:
أَحَدْ
When stopping, the د is pronounced with a light bounce.
Types of Qalqalah
Scholars mention two levels:
🔹 Minor Qalqalah (Sughra)
When the letter has sukoon in the middle of a word.
🔹 Major Qalqalah (Kubra)
When stopping on the letter at the end of a word.
This bounce is slightly stronger.
However, it should never be exaggerated.
Common Mistakes
- Over-exaggerating the echo
- Adding an extra vowel sound
- Weak pronunciation without a bounce
Qalqalah is a controlled, quick vibration — not a full extra syllable.
Why Is Qalqalah Important?
- It ensures clarity in pronunciation
- It strengthens the sound of certain letters
- It preserves the original recitation style
- It enhances the rhythm of the Quran
Without Qalqalah, words may sound flat or unclear.
How to Practice Qalqalah
- Practice the five letters individually with sukoon
- Compare words with and without Qalqalah
- Recite slowly and focus on precision
- Listen to experienced reciters and imitate carefully
